Firstly you need to look for signs of rot or damage and then look out for connections such as screws, hinges or nails. Once you`ve replaced these, with the help of a good tradesman if you need it, you can then get to applying the new protection.

Don`t forget to give it a good clean before you start repairing and applying stain. Look out for anything mossy or grey and scrape it all away until you can see the wood again.
